Galvan Torque Fly Reels

As the premier reel in the Galvan series, the Torque represents the culmination of a lifetime of fly-fishing and passion for reel design. Simply stated, it represents the very best of modern fly reel architecture. The Torque was created because Boni wanted to create a revolutionary reel with more sufficient drag system than was presently available on the market and it had to be sexy. Thus the Torque was born

The unique Torque reel, the 4th series in creation, was the first reel released with our Torque drag system, which is now employed in all of our reels. Its inception was in late 2002 with prototypes coming to life in 2003. After being tested, retested and modified it was finally released to the public in 2004. It immediately won the 2004 Editors choice in Fly Fish America and was ranked #3 in the recent 8 weight reel shoot out, beating out all other reels in function and price (link). Its original style and unique porting has solidified Galvan’s reputation as a leading innovator in the industry.

The visually striking appearance of the Torque is a result of the unique cutouts on the frame, spool, drag knob and foot. This design is not only aesthetic but also structural as it significantly reduces the weight of the reel while maintaining strength and increasing rigidity .The rounded rims on both spool and frame enhance durability to better withstand impact during extreme angling conditions.

From first glance, the hand is drawn to the reel and from the first crank of the contoured counter balance spool, the quality becomes apparent: efficiency and simplicity driven by function. In this case, less is more and cost is no exception as the Torque retails at half the price of reels in its class.

The Torque is saltwater safe, and will perform flawlessly under the harshest conditions. From remote alpine lakes to the saltwater flats the highly ventilated spool and frame balance nicely with the lightest of todays fly rods yet still compliments a modern big game saltwater stick. The Torque is tough as nails and skillfully marries the technology of the future with the tradition of the past.

Galvan Tension System

In 2013, Galvan reels introduced the ultra-lightweight Brookie reel and with it our proprietary version of the traditional click-pawl drag, the revolutionary new Galvan Tension System. The adjustable spool tension is made possible by Galvan’s new tension plunger which is backed by a silicone spring and adjustable set screw in place of the more common spring tension found in traditional click pawl reels. This set-and-forget element of the Galvan Tension System lets the angler add a personal touch of customization to a click drag reel.

With a total of 8 pieces in the frame and 13 pieces in the spool, including screws and springs, Galvan is bringing a new meaning to the words elegant simplicity. The spool tension comes preset to prevent spool overrun but is slightly adjustable with an included allen wrench to fine-tune the tension to your personal liking. The tension plunger is constructed of Ertalyte TX, which is the same proven material that we use in our Torque drag system.

Torque Drag System

The Torque drag system is the backbone of the Galvan line of reels and widely recognized for its smooth reliable action and subdued, unobtrusive single pawl click. It clicks as line is both pulled from and retrieved by our reels indicating to the angler possible subtle adjustments that need to be made on the go. Although based on the compression disc drags of our original reels the new smooth and reliable state-of-the-art thermoplastic and carbon fiber disc drag requires minimal lubrication and virtually no maintenance.

There are no ball bearings. Instead, a trouble free, self-lubricating HPV (high pressure velocity) hi-tech plastic bushing allows the spool near-frictionless rotation. Humidity will not affect its performance, nor rain, salt spray or dunking while wading.

Our single pawl technology is so efficient and effective that redundant pawls are excess baggage. With fewer moving parts there is less to go wrong in the system. As the size of the reel goes up the size of the drag surface increases. The Torque drag system by Galvan is arguably the best drag system available today.
